Brewery’s Wake: Art in the Park on the Falls Road

The Falls Park in the heart of West Belfast was a hive of creative activity with the installation of community artist, Deborah Malcomson's, new pop-up project 'Brewery's Wake'. A tribute to the memory of the Bass Brewery on the Glen Road, the installation of an old irish wake house was the focus of a one day event in the park where local people were invited to come and remember the importance of the Bass Brewery and the part it played in the local community. Pupils from Newhill Afterschools, Coláiste Feirste, and Corpus Christi College worked alongside the artist to create the installation using artefacts, old staff photographs and artworks salvaged from the recently demolished brewery site. It was a great day and a pleasure, as alway, to work with Deirdre Mackle and the rest of the team at the Upper Springfield Road Development Trust.

Christian Louboutin Pops Up at Selfridges

Christian Louboutin has been popping up everywhere and now they have popped up in the Wonder Room at Selfridges. The description of a 'pop-up' store belies the size and effortless elegance of the new installation on the ground floor of Selfridges in London and as usual, I was not at a loss for something to shoot. The attention to detail carries through from the shoes, to the interiors, to the magnificent moving window displays, and it is a visual feast which doesn't disappoint....don't get me started on the shoes! Gentlemen, you are in for a treat, with most of the pop-up store dedicated to the men's line, you will be hard pressed not to be wooed by Loubie cool.

The SHS Group: A Celebration of 30 years in Business

This is the sort of commercial project that I love. So a big thank you goes out to the lovely, Lisa Dynan, designer extraordinaire, who recommended me for the job. The SHS Group is a Northern Irish success story. As one of the largest mid market private companies in the UK and Ireland, with a turnover of over £400 million, they are at the top of their game. The brands they own or distribute are present in all of our shopping trolleys: WKD, Merrydown Cider, Bottle Green, Tunnocks, Jordans, Colgate, Danone, to name a few. To celebrate over 30 years in the business of manufacturing and distribution, a book documenting the history of the group from its inception in 1975 to the present day was conceived. Blackstaff Press were tasked with its creation and I was brought on board to create a body of images capturing the day to day running of their operations in Belfast. The pictures are a candid visual narrative of the company and its workforce. It was a pleasure working with the staff at SHS and I was thrilled to leave the warehouse with a gift of a box of Tunnocks tea cakes!

Christian Louboutin Opens at Harvey Nichols in Manchester

By now I am used to being surrounded by fashion cool when I do a Louboutin job. The shoes, the staff, the interiors and the locations are always impeccable, oozing as they do, style by design......something of a shock to the system for a Converse wearing, jeans porting, t-shirt wearing photographer. But, putting these feelings of fashion inadequacy to one side, on a visual level, a Louboutin job is always a feast for the eyes. The new manchester store is no exception. Harvey Nichols, stunning in itself, is the chic location and Louboutin is a fabulous new addition to their shoe floor. It would seem that the ladies of Manchester would agree, as the new concession was buzzing with activity throughout the day. I didn't spy any footballers' wives but I suspect they may be taking a trip to Harvey Nich's in the not too distant future!

Super Vivere Opens in Wolverhampton

It was great to be in Wolverhampton last week to install Super Vivere at its second location. The gallery is a wonderful space and probably best described as a mini Tate Britain, housed as it is in a majestic old building with a very striking contemporary extension. The exhibition space lies between the Georgian and Victorian galleries in the original building. These spaces are full of portraits and artefacts by and of celebrated figures from the Midlands, so the faces of my older subjects, though a contrast, look strangely at ease in their new home. A big thank you to all the staff at Wolverhampton, in particular the lovely Helen Oliver whose help and guidance was invaluable and the fabulously innovative technical team, who got us out of a few installation pickles.

A visit to the gallery is well worth the trip generally. Their exhibition line up at the moment consists of a Willie Doherty retrospective (review from me to come), 'Troubled Land' by Paul Graham, and 'Olympic Posters: Pop and Publicity' which is a fabulously colourful display of posters from the ill fated 1972 olympics in Munich. So, I am in very good company. But if the art isn't enough to tempt you, the cake in the Gallery Cafe should, as it is unfeasibly good! I also had two delicious Bengali meals at Bilash Restaurant, which is situated a stone's throw from the gallery. If you want a proper curry, The Midlands is where it is at!

A few pictures of the show in situ, though unfinished, taken very quickly on my phone:

I am pleased to say that the preparations for the tour of Super Vivere are going well and the brochure for the exhibition has now gone to print. The show will be travelling to Wolverhampton early in 2012 and opening on 14th January. The team at the gallery have been enormously supportive and I am really looking forward to seeing it in situ in such a wonderful space right in the heart of Wolverhampton. A sneak preview of the brochure poster is included below.

It was a pleasure working with Upper Springfield Road Development Trust on this public showcase event. The Andersonstown Barracks Site came alive with community arts project installations which were inspired or created in collaboration with the older people living in West Belfast. Artwork included a knitted tree and a wall of wax memories! It was a fun afternoon of work.

I took a trip to Paris last month to shoot the new Christian Louboutin Men's Store on Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It is the first men's boutique in the world and it is a wonderful space. The shoes are of course effortlessly cool, so get in the starting blocks chaps, because it is going to be busy busy busy!

Antique Fireplaces Ireland is the place to buy a period fireplace. They have all sizes to fit all houses and they do just that. And you couldn't find a nicer couple of chaps to sell them to you either than Messrs. Ryan and Smith. I headed down to Stewartstown in Co. Tyrone for a couple of days a few weeks ago to take some images of their new stock for website and brochure use.

Christian Louboutin's Fabulous Pieces: The New Window in Mayfair is a tribute to heels and hair and beautiful ladies. It is as imaginative and eye catching as ever. I love that the dark haired beauty looks a little like Joan Collins, but my absolute favourite is the georgeous auburn belle on the right with her green shoe tiara!
